Flea Prevention and Extermination
We know that there are a lot of pet owners in Staten Island, and every pet owner should be concerned about protecting the health of their animals by taking steps to prevent a Flea Infestation from ever making its way into their home.
One of the things that makes fleas so annoying is that they are prolific procreators. It only takes a single pair of fleas to create a full-blown infestation, and just one mating pair can create a lineage of a quarter million fleas in only thirty days.
Like Bedbugs, fleas seek out warm-blooded animals. Unlike Bedbugs, they seek out pets with thick fur, like cats and dogs, and breed and lay their eggs on the animals themselves. Fleas will feed on humans, but fleas will not nest on human hosts.
Flea Prevention Tips
Here are some things that you as a homeowner can do to keep fleas from infiltrating your home:
- Give your pet a monthly oral or topical flea treatment. A few of the most common brands are Program, Frontline, and Advantage. These flea medicines are not pesticides and are not harmful to your pets.
- Another way to limit the spread of fleas is with Boric Acid or Diatomaceous Earth. When exposed to these products, fleas experience severe dehydration which kills both the fleas themselves and their larva. These products are not harmful to you, your children, or your pets.
- Clean the areas where your pets like to sleep on a weekly basis. Fleas will nest and lay their eggs both on your pets and where they have easy access to your pets. By washing these items regularly, you can significantly decrease the risk of a major Flea Infestation.
- If you are looking for a green solution to reducing the influence of fleas on your yard, consider purchasing nematode sprays. Nematodes are miniscule insects that feed on fleas and similar pests. Nematodes don’t harm the ecology of your yard, because they don’t harm other insects like spiders, earthworms, or ladybugs which can be beneficial to your yard.
These treatments are known as Insect Growth Regulators. They prevent Bedbugs from developing into sexual maturity, which causes them to die off quickly. These treatments will eliminate fleas on your pet sometime between three and ten days after the treatment is applied.
These treatments work for most pets, but a minority do experience allergic reactions to these products, which are typically mild. If your pet does display a response, change flea medications.
These products work because they draw the moisture out of the exoskeleton, from the lipids that create the waxy texture and appearance of the exoskeleton. This creates a decrease in water pressure which kills the pest.
A simple way to protect your home from fleas (and Bedbugs) is by vacuuming on a regular basis. Fleas will often hide out in carpets waiting for a host to pass by for feeding, and by vacuuming, you can suck them up before they acquire a host or bite you.
After vacuuming, it is important to put the vacuum bag in a sealed plastic bag so that the fleas can’t get out, then simply toss the bag in the trash can.
We recommend treating your yard with nematodes once every six to eight weeks in order to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment while minimizing the cost to you.
