Many of the apartment buildings along the Grand Concourse were built in the 1920s and 1930s. Concourse was once a predominantly Jewish neighborhood until about the 1960s and 1970s. During its heyday between the '20s and the early '50s, the Concourse was a high-status address. Many Jewish families felt they had achieved the American dream when they had a Grand Concourse address. Moreover the Concourse is one of the world's greatest repositories of Art Deco architecture in the world. Poverty skyrocketed during this period and as a result crime and other social problems plagued the area. Unlike most of the South Bronx, most of the housing stock along the Grand Concourse was not torn down by the city. In recent years there has been an uptick in the amount of units that have transitioned from being owned by coop sponsors to being owned by the tenants of the coop.
